1. Measure before you guess

2. The 26°C rule (with a fan)

Afternoon sun on glass turns rooms into greenhouses. Use light blackout curtains or reflective film on west-facing windows. Shade the outdoor AC unit without blocking airflow so the condenser rejects heat efficiently.
6. Seal the cooled room
Gaps under doors and leaky sliding windows dump expensive cold air. Cheap weather strips and door snakes are among the highest-ROI summer spends.
7. Kill phantom loads
TVs, set-top boxes, microwaves, and chargers draw standby power 24/7. Switch them off at the wall. Older fridge stabilizers can also waste continuous watts if voltage is already stable.
8. Efficient fans and LEDs
Multiple ceiling fans run all day in summer. High-efficiency or DC fans often draw far less than older motors — check the nameplate watts rather than assuming a fixed percentage. Replace CFL “energy savers” with LEDs to cut both watts and waste heat.
9. Keep tax status in mind for high bills
Very high monthly bills can attract additional income-tax withholding for non-active taxpayers under prevailing FBR rules. Energy saving still comes first; then confirm your filer status if your payable amount is consistently large.
