How the Tool Works (Step-by-Step)
- Note previous reading (same day last cycle or last bill).
- Note current reading from the meter kWh screen.
- Confirm meter factor (usually 1 for domestic A-1).
- Enter days in the period for a daily average.
- Units ≈ (current − previous) × factor; slab band is inferred from that total.

How to Read Your Meter
Digital single-phase meters cycle screens — wait for kWh. Analog dials read left to right. ToU meters need separate peak and off-peak registers (use this tool twice, or the ToU calculator for cost).
- Digital Single-Phase Meters: These are the most common domestic meters. The digital screen will cycle through various displays. Wait until the screen displays 'kWh' (usually the default screen or screen number 01). Note down the whole numbers; you generally ignore the decimal places (often in a different color or separated by a dot).
- Analog (Disc) Meters: These older meters feature rotating dials with numbers. Read the numbers from left to right to get your current reading.
- Three-Phase / Time of Use (ToU) Meters: If your sanctioned load is above 5kW, you likely have a ToU meter. You must note down two separate kWh readings: Peak (usually labeled as T-1 or Peak) and Off-Peak (labeled as T-2 or Off-Peak).
Unit Calculation Formula (Plain English)
Meters accumulate kWh over their lifetime; they do not reset each month. Monthly usage is the difference between two readings on comparable dates, multiplied by any meter factor.

You might notice the 'Meter Factor' input in our calculator. For most standard domestic residential connections (A-1 tariff), the meter factor is typically 1 — so the difference between the two readings equals consumed units. Always confirm the multiplying factor printed on your bill if you have a CT or commercial connection.
However, for heavy commercial, industrial, or massive agricultural tube-well connections, specialized meters are used that cannot display the massive physical current passing through them. These meters use Current Transformers (CT). For these connections, the physical difference on the meter display must be multiplied by a specific 'Factor' (e.g., 10, 40, or 100) to get the actual units. You can find your specific multiplying factor clearly printed on the top section of your physical MEPCO bill.
Tracking Daily Averages to Save Your Protected Status
One practical reason to track your meter mid-cycle is to stay aware of lower Protected Consumer rate bands when those rules apply to your connection. Eligibility thresholds and consecutive-month requirements are set in NEPRA determinations — confirm them on your bill or the NEPRA schedule rather than treating this page as a subsidy rulebook.
Our calculator provides a 'Daily Average' metric. If you are aiming to stay near a ~200-unit monthly band on a 30-day window, that is roughly 6.6 units per day as a planning ceiling. Checking every few days gives time to reduce non-essential load if you are running hot — then refine cost with the bill calculator or a daily target in the budget planner.
When Results Differ from the Official Bill
Official reading dates, estimated (defective meter) billing, CT factors, and ToU peak/off-peak splits can all differ from a mid-cycle snapshot you take. Your reading check is a consumer estimate for budgeting — the printed bill remains authoritative.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What should I do if my meter reading is lower than my previous reading?▼
This usually happens in two scenarios: First, your meter has completely maxed out its digits (e.g., reached 99999) and rolled over back to zero, much like a car odometer. Second, the meter reading recorded by the MEPCO linesman in the previous month was falsely inflated (over-reading). If you suspect the latter, you must immediately visit your local subdivision office with photographic evidence of your current meter reading.
How does MEPCO charge if my meter goes defective or is burnt?▼
If your meter stops functioning, becomes unreadable, or burns out, MEPCO cannot take a physical reading. According to NEPRA regulations, you will be billed on an 'Estimated' basis. This estimation is typically calculated by averaging your electricity consumption from the exact same month of the previous year, or taking the average of the last 11 months, whichever protocol the subdivision follows. You must report a burnt meter immediately.
Can I read my ToU meter with this standard calculator?▼
Yes, but you must do it in two separate steps. First, input your previous and current Off-Peak readings to find your Off-Peak units. Then, refresh the calculator and input your previous and current Peak readings to find your Peak units. Add both results together for your total monthly consumption.
